1. A genuine lifetime roof: Copper roofs regularly pass a hundred years of service and European examples several times that. The patina that forms on the surface is a stable, self-renewing protective layer, which is why copper does not need coating or painting, ever.

2. It improves as it weathers: Almost every building material looks best on installation day and declines from there. Copper is the exception. The progression from bright metal through bronze to verdigris is the reason architects specify it, and it happens on its own.

3. Naturally resistant to biological growth: Trace copper washing off the roof in rain suppresses moss, algae and lichen, both on the copper itself and often on the surfaces below it. Some homeowners install copper ridge strips on other roof types for exactly this effect.

4. Very light for a metal: Copper is thin and light enough that it almost never requires structural reinforcement, which makes it practical for retrofitting onto existing dormers, bays and porches.

5. Completely recyclable: Copper holds real scrap value and is recycled indefinitely without loss of quality. At the end of a century of service the material still has worth.

Our Copper Roofing Process

Copper is a sheet metal craft rather than a tile-laying job, and the detailing is what separates work that lasts a century from work that fails in ten years.

1. Design consultation: We start with what you are actually trying to achieve, whether that is a full standing seam roof, a copper bay or turret, or copper valleys and accents against another material. Copper is often used most effectively in a supporting role.

2. Thermal movement planning: Copper expands and contracts significantly with temperature, and Texas gives it a wide annual swing. Panel lengths, cleat spacing and expansion detailing are calculated for that movement. Copper that is pinned rigidly will buckle or tear at the fixings, and this is the single most common failure we are called to repair.

3. Substrate preparation: We install a smooth, sound deck with a high-temperature underlayment and a slip sheet, so the copper can move over the substrate without abrading.

4. Fabrication: Pans, cleats, flashings and trim are fabricated to the dimensions of your specific roof, in the shop or on site depending on the piece.

5. Installation and seaming: Panels are set on concealed cleats and the seams are locked and folded. Soldered work at gutters, valleys and complex junctions is done with proper irons and flux, and we avoid galvanic contact with incompatible metals throughout.

6. Handover and patina guidance: We explain how your copper will change over the coming years, what the timeline looks like in this climate, and what your options are if you want to accelerate or delay the patina.
